I was only joking a few days ago when I said we went to England to get away from the heat in Seville –that was actually a phone promotion to call England for free.
Today we actually went to England…Gibraltar, but we didn’t exactly escape the heat.
We took an almost 3 hour bus ride to La Linea; the Spanish town that borders the British Territory. The ride was not very exciting, but we saw a lot of windmills.
Once in La Linea, we walked across the border into England and hopped on a bus that took us across a runway and into Gibraltar Proper.
From there we took a cable car to the top of this immense Pillar of Hercules.
At the top we were greeted by “apes”; Barbary Macaques monkeys - cute and fuzzy, but to be taken cautiously.
Along with a spectacular panoramic view of the bay and Spain, we could also see the other Pillar across the strait, in Africa, although it was a little hazy.
After taking in the spectacular views, we headed to St. Michael’s Cave. Within the cave, we looked in awe at the magnificent stalactites, stalagmites and columns.
From the cool (both literally and figuratively) caves we took a long and hot walk down the grade to the Great Siege Tunnels.
These tunnels were constructed over the years for various wars to contain cannons to defend “The Rock”.
Further along our descent, we made a few quick stops at a “City Under Siege” Exhibit and a portion of the still-remaining Moorish wall. We were in a bit of a pinch for time to catch the last bus back to Cadiz.
Before heading back across the border, we stopped at a Subway to get some sandwiches for the bus ride home. The girl behind the counter was from Kingston, Ontario – travelling and working her way across Europe for the last 6 months.
While we were in “England”, it was actually weird to hear so many people speaking English. My brain enjoyed the break of not having to work too hard to figure out what people were saying.
We are now safely back in Spain, after our slight hiatus.
