Last Vacation Day in Madrid

(Happy Canada Day to our Canadian relatives and friends!)

It’s hard to believe that we leave for Sevilla tomorrow. This week has gone by so fast!!

Today we revisited some familiar areas and did some final shopping, both for souvenirs and leisure. Jasmin has become quite the fashion shopper…oh dear!

The Metro was running at 50%, so we didn’t have the pleasure of experiencing the bus today – just a slightly more crowded subway.

We went into the main building of a major mobile phone company (Telefonica/Movistar) to sort out a European phone for me.  While we were purchasing and setting everything up, the kids explored the two floors of the store by following a scavenger hunt of cool hi-tech stuff (I wish I could’ve done it too). It was all in Spanish and the employees spoke very little English, but they had a blast and the boys earned free T-shirts and little backpacks for their efforts. The girls didn’t go to the trouble to get their booklets stamped (part of the scavenger hunt), but were rewarded backpacks for sticking close to their brothers.

At lunch, we headed back to the Plaza Mayor and were fortunate to get another glimpse of Spiderman”. Dave describes him as “a Spiderman that no web could hold; who’s confused himself with the Karate Kid”. Ben had fun posing with him (everyone else was scared…).

After lunch, I, unfortunately, stepped off a sidewalk and twisted my ankle. I think it’s just badly sprained and not broken. Regardless, it is not a good injury to have when most of our vacation is to be spent on foot. After two glasses of sangria and some anti-inflammatory medication (a benefit of having a husband with chronic back pain), it’s feeling much better. And fortunately, tomorrow is a travel day to be spent on the train (2.5hrs), so that should help too. The kids will be relieved to have a reprieve from my brisk pace…

We visited one last garden this afternoon; part of the Royal Palace. The kids enjoyed running through the labyrinth while I rested my foot and Dave took pictures.

Remember, we are in transit tomorrow and I can’t remember if our new apartment has WiFi. We will try to blog to include you in our journey.

Until we meet again in Sevilla…
